Wardrobe Essentials – Blazers

Something everyone should have in their wardrobe is a good blazer, it’s a piece that will work hard through the seasons.

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll know that I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect blazer since my personal shopping day with Leigh from Life With Style.

For my shape, I tend to need a longer line style that sits at my hips rather than my waist to balance out my short body/long legs (34″). I’m only 5ft 6 1/2″ and yes that extra 1/2″ makes all the difference.

Jackets are something in short supply in my wardrobe… I have my winter padded coat, a waterproof, a denim jacket and now a blazer, I would like to add a coat that will transition from autumn/winter to spring, a biker jacket and probably a checked blazer… obviously I can’t afford to add them all at once, but I keep my eye out on eBay as I’m listing things to sell, I have a search for things I’m looking to buy and the January sales are often a great time to pick up a bargain of a coat/jacket.

I’ve tried heaps of black blazers since October and not found the right one… that is until now. On Saturday, I was shopping for an outfit for a winter wedding and wanted a blazer to go with it. I wasn’t convinced I would find one, but then remembered that Kat from Does My Bum Look 40 shared a Ponte Blazer from Marks & Spencer in her stories and said it was a great one, so thought I would give it a try.

M&S Ponte Blazer – Black £59 (also available in Navy)

This blazer is almost a heavy jersey fabric with added stretch so it’s got a good weight to it (there’s so many out there at the moment that are thin/flimsy) so will be great for all seasons.

The gold buttons add a little something extra which allow it to be dressed up or down, but makes it less like a suit jacket.

I tried the blazer on with this yellow top.

M&S Collection Round Neck Short Sleeve Shell Top – Dark Yellow £19.50

This short sleeve top is a versatile piece that looks great with a trusty pair of jeans or tucked into a midi skirt.

I’m so glad I found this one, look forward to styling it with pieces in my wardrobe. The blazer looks great paired with jeans and ankle boots now but will also transition to spring paired with jeans and trainers or a midi skirt.

These are the trainers on my wishlist.

Dune Edris Stud – White £75

M&S Collection Relaxed Patch Pocket Blazer – Black £35 (available in various colours)

I tried this blazer and it’s a great option but it’s thin, so probably better for spring/summer rather than all year round.

Oasis Edge To Edge Blazer – Mid Grey £35

Grey is a fab neutral as an alternative to black or navy and will go with everything. This Oasis blazer from ASOS is great value and will work hard in your wardrobe.

B. Young Classic Blazer – Med Grey £25

This slightly oversized blazer looks fab with cropped jeans and a polo-neck as styled in the photo but I think it would also look great over a pinafore dress and paired with slouchy boots or knee high boots for winter.

If black, navy or grey isn’t your thing and you’re looking to add a pop of colour then with the hope of spring on the way (although having just seen the weather forecast, it could be a while away yet), a coloured blazer could be more your style.

H&M Blue Jacket £34.99

The deep v and single button on this jacket with no lapels mean that it will be flattering on most body shapes. The colour is a great transitional one for all seasons.

H&M Dark Red Blazer £24.99

This is one of my favourite colours, not just for autumn/winter, but it carries well into spring/summer too… Wear now with a fine knit jumper, jeans and boots or style with lighter jeans and a Breton top and trainers for spring/summer.

Asos Design Mix & Match Blazer – Forest Green £38

Another blazer that will work hard for all seasons, wear with black, navy, denim, mustard, burgundy, camel and even the pastel trend that is set to be big from spring 2019. If you’re not a fan of pastels then pairing them with a darker colour is a way to ease your way into them.

If you’re in the market for a checked blazer then there’s a few options out there:

M&S Collection Checked Open Front Blazer

Wear with jeans and a t-shirt as styled in the photo or layer over a dress.

If you prefer a double breasted blazer then this one could be an option.

M&S Collection Checked Double Breasted Blazer £55

I love the pattern of this one, but double breasted styles don’t work for my shape as they add volume and generally tend to be a bit more boxy but they could work for you. Everyone is different, so it could be worth a try.

H&M Checked Blazer £15

Long jacket in jersey with narrow notch lapels and front pockets. Unlined. This may not be the warmest blazer so would probably be better kept for spring/summer, but it’s a good bargain in the sale.

H&M Fitted Black/Dogtooth-Patterned Blazer £24.99

A more fitted option which could be dressed up for work, ideal to go from day to night worn over dresses in the office and then add a statement necklace for Friday night drinks.

Miss Selfridge Pearl Button Double Breasted Checked Blazer £49

Pearls are always appropriate… the faux pearl buttons add a little edge to this Miss Selfridge at ASOS blazer. If this was a single breasted style I would love it.

So that’s a brief round up of some of my fave blazers on the high street/online at the moment.

Which one is your favourite? How will you style yours?

Hope you have a great weekend.
