Everyday Wardrobe Essentials

If you’ve read some of my recent posts – The Cost of Fashion and Life With Style, you’ll know, that I’m trying to think more about the items in my wardrobe and I’d like to invest in quality pieces that will work hard in my wardrobe.

As I’ve mentioned before, I am trying to move away from a fast fashion mindset, while still shopping the high street as it’s where my budget is.

I won’t include basic jersey tops as I tend to buy most of my them from H&M, they’re all plain, jersey and of varying colours so not very exciting to post about.

So here’s my list… (it might be different for you), some of these I already have and some I am either saving up to invest in e.g. leather biker jacket.

A Good Pair Of Jeans

Whether it’s skinny, slim fit, straight leg, boot cut, boyfriend or flare. There’s a style of jeans that will flatter every shape and style. I hate shopping for jeans, I often struggle to get jeans long enough. Apparently 34inch legs are awkward… In most stores regular tends to be 32inch and tall ranges are often 36inches which is too long. I can sometimes get away with a regular in skinny jeans depending on how high waisted they are.

At the moment, I tend to prefer skinny jeans paired with a longer top/shirt.

I love H&M Shaping Skinny Jeans, the quality is amazing and they are long enough in the leg for me.

Premium Quality… Shaping. 5-pocket jeans in washed denim with technical stretch that holds in and shapes the tummy, thighs and seat while keeping the jeans in shape. Regular waist and skinny leg.

H&M Shaping Jeans

Gap always have a great collection of jeans (I am slightly biased having worked there as a student), they have added so many different styles to their range over the years so I might have to pop in and give them a try sometime soon.

It’s worth going in and speaking to one of their denim experts and they will help you find the perfect pair of jeans.

I also have a great pair of black skinny jeans from F&F at Tesco (that’s right, don’t forget about the supermarkets, they have some great denim at the moment), I need to get the smaller size, but since Tesco website no longer exists and there’s not a big store with clothing as near me, it’s harder to shop F&F.

I can’t link the jeans,  but here’s a photo of them from September, I don’t have any from this month yet. These ones pictured are the shorter length so fit like ankle grazers which was great for summer but less ideal through winter unless tucked into knee high boots, so I picked up a pair of longer ones in a smaller size at Tesco at the weekend when I happened to be there picking up food for a friend’s baby shower.

A Blazer

You can’t go wrong with a black blazer.

Fit will be very much dependent on your shape and style preference. I like slightly longer-line boyfriend style blazers for my shape. They look great with jeans, skirts and dresses. I am on the lookout for a new one to replace my one that has seen better days. I’ve tried a few but not yet found the perfect one.

There’s blazers everywhere at the moment, here’s a few that I’ve seen that you may like too:

Oasis Edge To Edge Blazer

I tried this one on and it’s gorgeous, it wasn’t quite the right fit for me though, so I’m still on the hunt for the perfect blazer.

Oasis Blazer

New Look Black ¾ Sleeve Blazer

This ticks the box for being more of a relaxed fit and longer line (in that it doesn’t sit on the waist), although not sure I would choose 3/4 sleeve in winter unless it was going to be worn under a coat.

New Look Black Blazer

This is a slightly more formal option but would look equally great dressed down with jeans.

M&S Collection Blazer

This single breasted blazer looks great dressed up or down. Available in black or navy.

A Biker Jacket

This is something that’s still on my wish list… Ideally I would like to wait and save invest in a leather biker jacket but there’s a lot of great faux leather ones available at the moment too, so I may be persuaded to buy a faux leather one.

Goosecraft Black Biker Jacket

I’d seen this jacket on a few people on Instagram and it looks lovely. This is a leather one so it would be an investment piece but would last for years.

Warehouse Faux Leather Biker Jacket

I was out with a friend for a personal shopping/styling day recently and she picked up a similar version to this jacket in the sale at Warehouse a few years ago and she was saying hers has lasted really well, so it’s maybe worth keeping an eye out on the sales. They didn’t have my size in store when we were in Warehouse that day but I’ll be keeping my eye out for it or might even order it to try on. Thank goodness for student discount.

A Denim Shirt

Dress down with black jeans and trainers or pair with a midi skirt and boots for a more elevated look. Finish the look with a statement necklace or statement earrings.

Knitwear

If like me you’re always cold then knitwear is essential…

I’m partial to a longline chunky knit cardigan.

Matalan Chunky Sleeve Longline Cardigan

This rich burgundy colour is perfect for autumn/winter.

New Look Mustard Shawl Collar Cardigan

Mustard is another ideal colour for autumn/winter, but will transition well in warmer months too.

As much as I love a chunky knit, they don’t always fit under jackets. Fine knits can be layered and still keep you cozy.

Stella & Dot Addy Versatile Poncho

The gorgeous Addy Versatile Poncho can be worn as a top or a cardigan depending on the weather or your mood. Available in charcoal and black (blush pink discontinued).

Oasis Bethany Bugle Bead Jumper

This gorgeous teal coloured jumper with embellished shoulders looks great dresses up or down. Also available in black.

M&S Collection Cashmilon Round Neck Long Sleeve Jumper

I came across this jumper on Instagram and saw it in store recently for the first time. Several colours to choose from and a bargain price, it would definitely be worth it for a classic jumper that will work hard in your wardrobe. Wear with jeans, skirts or trousers or size up and wear over dresses.

A Scarf

You know me and my thing for scarves…

Update your outfit effortlessly by adding a scarf.

Stella & Dot Kaci Versatile Scarf – Black Metallic

Wear this gorgeous versatile scarf any three waysas an infinity scarf, draped or snap it to make a cape! It’s super and flecked with metallic threading, so it’s the perfect addition to any cosy outfit for autumn/winter.

If you prefer a blanket scarf to keep the cold away then Stella & Dot have you covered.

Stella & Dot Large Geometric Scarf

This scarf has neutral hues of blues, browns and greys so will go with most outfits. It will make this oversized scarf your favourite of the season.

So that’s a few of my wardrobe essentials. Is there anything I’m missing that you would include? (I’ve not included boots or coats as I’ve already written blog posts on them) I’d love to know.

Hope you have a good week.
